The New One Hit Wonder

What constitutes a one hit wonder when you step outside the realm of popular music?

The more pretentious selective you are about your musical taste, the more you hoard. Thus, you download albums instead of singles. Since I’ve started doing this, I’ve self-redefined the one hit wonder. When an album collectively is cohesive, creative, inspired etc. but I only really like one song from it.

Two examples:

Chairlift’s Bruises off of Does You Inspire You

Heard this song on an iPod commercial. It’s incredibly catchy. The rest of the album… whenever a song
comes up on shuffle I usually just change it to Bruises.

The Knife’s Heartbeats off of Deep Cuts

Became ingrained into my life after hearing it every week at a bar where some friends DJ. Now, I have random cravings to hear it (and subsequently dance). The rest of the album… eh, who cares put on Heartbeats.

GQ's 50 Most Stylish Men of the Past 50 Years

Favorite musical artist choices from GQ's 50 Most Stylish Men of the Past 50 Years

BECK (click click click)

Beck is a little dude, only 5'7. Yet when he makes his bold fashion choices and rocks quirky, off-beat vintage pieces he's like a 6'2 adonis of style.

KURT cobain (click click click)

What I love most about Kurt Cobain being on this list is that I don't think he gave a f*@# about fashion, yet he defined a decade's style. Better to burn out than fade away, eh?

RAMONES (click click click)

YES. Put your leather on, The Ramones made it so.

PETE doherty (click click click)

At first I was like, say what? (but then I lol'd) I think all the drug abuse has distracted from the fact that he does have banging threads. For being such a mess, he always exudes this “clean-cut” punk style reminiscent of yesteryear. And I think that's what being stylish is all about... looking good even when you've just smoked up a speedball. Yeah?

Oh, Jack

So, Jack White of The White Stripes has a new SUPER BAND. To my knowledge it's number 2 (number one being The Raconteurs). The newest being The Dead Weather a conglomeration of... Alison Mosshart (of The Kills), guitarist Dean Fertita (of Queens of the Stone Age), bassist Jack Lawrence (of The Raconteurs and The Greenhornes) and drummer/vocalist Jack White (of The White Stripes and The Raconteurs). Some Raconteurs sloppy seconds, but I don't mind. Their debut album is apparently being released real real soon. I'm excited to listen.

PS- How sexy is this picture?

Sexcellent cover of 'Happiness is a Warm Gun' (bang bang shoot shoot) by Kim Deal's (Pixies' bassist) band The Breeders. Love her, love them.

Fer Yer Consideration

The Nacho Libre Soundtrack is surprisingly good, considering the movie is so silly. It features three tracks from Beck, as well as contributions from Danny Elfman... who does the soundtrack to every movie ever made. Listen to some selected snippets, but I suggest exploring the entire soundtrack. It's really cohesive, fun, and has a lot of sexy Latin flare. I feel like saying 'Latin' isn't PC. Best of intentions.

Yes!

Just heard 'Two Weeks' by Grizzly Bear off their newest album Veckitamest played on the radio by this guy:

He then proceeded to play like 18 live recordings of Eric Clapton.
Life is good.

REEEEMIXXXXX

Remix of Rick Ross' jam by Snakes Say Hisss! Check 'em out, blast them at your next partay.

Unless you're so progressive you don't even play music at your parties. Dang.

(P.S.- The claymation hamburger footage is courtesy of the 80's gem 'Better Off Dead' starring a young, dapper John Cusack. If you've never seen this movie, do so immediately)

Borrowing Music

Ch-check out these love connections.
It's no secret that artists sample from other artists work.
See for yourself:

'The Girl Can't Help It' - The Animals

'Clumsy' - Fergie

'Every Little Thing She Does is Magic' - The Police

'Come on Petunia'- The Blow (click click click)

I couldn't find a video for 'Come on Petunia' so check out more from The Blow (click click click). Really fun, really cute. Really.

That's a fun top...

Malin Ackerman (of Watchmen and 27 Dresses fame) at the MTV Movie Awards.

I have this theory, that if you cut off all her hair she'd look like a British man...

You Might Have Heard

Check out these fly indie bands who currently have songs featured in commercials:

The Dodo's 'Fools' off of their album Visiter featured in this Miller Chill commercial

Also, Matt & Kim's 'Daylight' off of their newest album Grand featured in this Bacardi Mojito commercial.

I saw Matt & Kim open for Cut Copy at House of Blues in Boston. I thought they were really cool, energetic, and genuinely having fun. However, I've heard many a person say they aren't impressed by the Brooklyn duo.

I think they're rad.

Also, everyone is hot and heavy for Cut Copy. Honestly, I don't get it. I found their brand of electronic indie pop generic and their songs sounded disappointingly similar.

Rash-up... rad mash-up

Live Your Life + A-Punk = YES

Simply Stunning

Born Ruffians (who kinda sound like Vampire Weekend, and remind me kinda of The Virgins) cover Grizzly Bear's 'Knife'. RAD! Listen aqui.

Similarly, one of indie's greatest alternative gods, Beck, covers Nick Drake's 'Pink Moon'. Listen aqui.

Finally, Daniel Rossen of Grizzly Bear covers JoJo's 'Too Little Too Late'. Basically resulting in epic awesomeness.

Loves it

You Should Listen

LITTLE JOY IS....
Fabrizio Moretti – Guitar/Tenor Guitar/Piano/Bass/Drums/ Percussion/Melodica & Backing Vocals
Binki Shapiro – Vocals/Guitar/Glockenspiel/Percussion & Backing Vocals
Rodrigo Amarante – Vocals/Guitar/Piano/Bass/Ukulele/Organ/ Melotron/ Percussion & Backing Vocals

Made of bits 'n pieces of other bands. Namely Fabrizio, the drummer for The Strokes. He used to date Drew Barrymore.

I like them because they are accessibly alternative. Also, any band that frequents the ukulele and glockenspiel gets my indifferent shrug masking genuine enjoyment of approval. Which roughly translates into 'two thumbs up'. Just listen bo kay?

Funny/Rad 3 Way Love Connection

“I try to dress like a rapper in a Michel Gondry movie.”

Remember this picture from f*&%ing hipster dot com?
Plenty more where that came from. Check out Yokoo's flickr where she
models her actually pretty cool original knitwear accessories.
This one is my favorite:

It reminds me of Miss Pussycat of Quintron and Miss Pussycat

They opened for Black Lips last year at Paradise. I was front row for their puppet show.
